Around Town with Judy Martini: Fox Lake Chamber of Commerce at Camp Duncan

On Feb. 24th, the Fox Lake Chamber of Commerce hosted their monthly meeting at YMCA Camp Duncan in Ingleside. YMCA Camp Duncan is a beautiful lodge and has been in existence since 1921. There are numerous cottage and cabins on the lakefront property which can accomodate up to 400 campers and guests. The camp has numerous programs for youths, with over 20,000 happy customers per year and hosts camps for burn victim children as well as numerous overnight camping programs for youths.

The guest speaker for this months Chamber meeting was Fox Lake Mayor Donny Schmit, who gave an update on the two local referendums which will be on the ballot this year. One referendum is a 1% sales tax increase which Mayor Schmit stated is needed because of a yearly 2 Million dollar shortfall in the Village's budget. The money would be used to hire additional police officers and staff, pay for needed street repairs and other infrastructure improvements. The additional sales tax will not be on titled vehicles or prescription drugs the Mayor said.

The other referendum is calling for the Village of Fox Lake residents to join the Fox Lake Fire District. Mayor Schmit noted that instead of the Village negotiating a fire contract with the fire district, the fire district would collect the tax money themselves and it would take the Village out of the negotiations. On a $200K home, taxpayers would be paying about $138 additional a year Mayor Schmit said.

Greg Stoxen, Fox Lake Chamber President, thanked all those in attendance and gave an update of the upcoming Chamber Fest Expo to be held March 5th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Grant High School. Vendors and businesses will be there along with various activities and games for young and old. Admission is free and there will be food services available for a minimal fee. The Chamber is also hosting a March 19th Easter Egg Hunt which will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. at the Lakefront Park. The Easter Egg hunt goes quickly, so make sure your kids are lined up at the appropriate time. There will be a Bunny Luncheon served from 10:00 a.m. -1:00 p.m. for a $4 per person. Hope to see you there!
